A new law could be passed that would ensure that car free routes could be used to link schools, hospitals and shopping centres.
Many local authorities have been told to start preparing integrated travel plans and start to raise the public awareness of the scheme and showing people the routes to cycle or walk.
More than 50% of all car journeys are less than 5 miles and most are less than 2 miles, both distances could easily be covered by foot or bike, these simples steps would be a massive step in the right direction to improve public health.
The NHS spend is spending £100M each year in dealing with physical inactivity and obesity and the disease that are linked to these problems as well. Having such a bill passed would be a huge step in providing routes for cycling and walking across the county and also vastly improving networks in cities all over the country.
This proposal could be the biggest health initiative to be put forward since the smoking ban.
